Idris in his studio in Herefordshire
Idris studied music at The Royal College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the University of York. He has an MA in Professional Media Composition from ThinkSpace Education.
Over the past thirty years, he has worked with many of the most prestigious orchestras, soloists, groups, bands and companies in the UK and beyond, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philharmonia, Welsh National Opera and Edward II.
Idris has a life-long passion for film and TV music as well as contemporary orchestral music. He has particularly broad tastes ranging from 1960s experimental jazz to Franz Waxman, Messiaen, Stravinsky, Debussy and the dramatic symphonies of Hector Berlioz. Combined with his considerable knowledge of orchestral repertoire, these flavours coalesce to help craft a unique compositional voice.
While able to produce music in a wide range of genres, he often combines orchestral writing with hybrid, synthetic elements and live instrumentalists to create magical, luminescent soundscapes in addition to more traditional, stylised work.
Idris has written music for BBC TV (recorded by members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra) and Channel 4 (music for a commissioned series of animation shorts) and has undertaken numerous commissions for private companies and in the charity and not-for-profit sector (including Read for Good with Tony Robinson). For the past three years, he has mainly been writing music to picture, including scores for wildlife documentaries, drama, short films and factual programmes.
Idris works from his studio in Herefordshire. He lives with his wife and two teenage sons (and when it pleases them, their two cats, neither of whom are very good pianists). Fairly often, they are surrounded by deranged ewes from the farm next door. Unlike the cats, the sheep have yet to feature in any of Idris’s compositions.
“Idris is a fearless and innovative composer, balancing a distinct individuality with a deep appreciation for the requirements of each score he writes. Whether creating music for film, television, or concert performance, Idris smoothly navigates a path through experimentation, sound design and traditional compositional techniques to create music that captivates and inspires.”
